What is the TASUKI PROJECT? [Tasuki Project -English-]

On 11 March 2011, a huge earthquake and unprecedented tsunami swept away the loved ones, the homes, the schools and livelihoods of whole communities in the Tohoku region of Japan.

Months later, much still remains to be done.

Although the world’s attention may be drawn elsewhere, the human need of those affected remains very great.

The TASUKI PROJECT was set up to respond to this need as soon as the disaster hit, and is committed to continue its help to individuals and families while the need exists.

What is the TASUKI PROJECT?

~ From Hand to Hand, From People to People ~

Straight after the disaster hit, TASUKI PROJECT started bringing food, equipment, clothing, toys – even underwear, toothbrushes and, pens and paper for schoolchildren – to communities who had been left with nothing.

But also greetings, messages of love and support from people in many parts of Japan and overseas, including many who had experienced severe loss in other natural disasters.

The TASUKI PROJECT connects people to people, providing a human chain of friendship and support in ways that governments can never do.

We are closely engaged with people in some of the worst affected areas, bringing goods, money and practical assistance – but most importantly connection – friendship, personal concern and support. This is particularly vital for people trying to cope with deep loss and personal distress.

The TASUKI  PROJECT  is all about connections – the way you pass the baton from hand to hand in a relay, or pitch in together to get a hard job done.

The TASUKI PROJECT exists to relay your thoughts, your kindness and your practical contributions direct to those who need them most.

TASUKI PROJECT Philosophy

Person to person help, friendship and support – delivering what people need and value in ways that governments and agencies can rarely hope to do.

That is the TASUKI PROJECT philosophy and practical approach.

The project has been formed and is run by people who themselves experienced another great disaster – the Kobe earthquake of 1995, called the Hanshin Awaji Earthquake.

While authorities struggled to come to terms with what had happened, volunteers spontaneously organised direct help to victims in the affected areas. Progressively they were joined by survivors themselves, and people who had lost family and friends.

From that was formed a group called the Light of Hope, which has received formal recognition as a non-profit community organisation by the government of Japan.

With these beginnings, we believe the TASUKI PROJECT has a special capacity to connect people who need support with those who sincerely want to give support and are sincerely concerned for their welfare.
